The Sole That Carries the Miles: Lactae Hevea

Well-Worn Paths

Chapter 6 — The Sole That Carries the Miles

The Path Continues.

In our Well-Worn Paths series, we’ve explored how a Rancourt shoe begins. From cutting leather to stitching, true moccasin handsewn construction, and finishing, every pair starts inside our Lewiston factory.

But once a pair leaves the factory floor, something else becomes just as important. The sole carries every mile ahead.

For many of our styles, that journey begins with Lactae Hevea.

A Natural Material: Lactae Hevea

Lactae Hevea soles are made from 100% natural hevea milk, harvested from the Hevea tree in Southeast Asia. The material is then sent to Virieu, France, where Reltex produces each sole using a time-intensive curing process that has remained largely unchanged.

Each sole takes time, roughly 10 to 12 days to complete. The latex is poured by hand into molds, then cured through alternating warm and cold water baths and drying rooms.

This process creates microscopic air pockets throughout the material, giving the sole its signature balance of cushioning and flexibility.

Comfort That Moves Naturally

Those air pockets are what set Lactae Hevea apart.

They allow the sole to compress and rebound with each step, creating softness underfoot while still holding up to everyday wear. The result is a sole that moves with you. It never feels rigid or forced. It becomes a natural extension of the shoe.

This is not about speed or mass production. It is about how something feels after hours, days, and years of wear.

Why We Use Lactae Hevea:

At Rancourt, we choose materials based on how they perform over time.

Lactae Hevea aligns with our approach to true hand-sewn moccasin construction. It prioritizes comfort, flexibility, and longevity rather than speed.

It takes longer to make. The difference is something you can feel with every step.

Speaking of how our shoes are made, here is a close look at how we incorporate Lactae Hevea soles in how we make some of our most popular pairs of shoes.

From Lewiston to the Miles Ahead

Every pair begins in Lewiston, shaped by hand and built with care. The real story begins once they leave the factory.

The sole beneath each step carries more than weight. It carries movement, places, and time. From city streets to coastal towns, each step adds to the life of the shoe.

Over time, those miles become part of it.

The Path Continues

This is the spirit of Well-Worn Path, the belief that a shoe is only just beginning when it leaves our hands.

What comes next is written by the people who wear them, shaped by where they go and how they live. In the chapters ahead, we will return with a closer look at new shoes as they step out into the world, and the stories that unfold with every mile worn into them.
